2007 PILGRIMAGE WRITING AWARD--$1000

The theme for this writing contest is peacemaking. We’re looking for personal stories that involve a non-violent way of resolving a conflict. While an act of peacemaking may begin with two people, we’re interested in acts of conflict resolution that directly affect a larger circle of people as well—in a family, a community, a region, even internationally. We’re looking for previously unpublished creative non-fiction up to 2500 words in length. And we’re looking for a piece of writing that is experiential, reflective, and tells a good story.

Two double-spaced copies of essay should be submitted with a cover sheet that includes name, address, e-mail and/or telephone contact, and the title of the essay. The writer’s name should not appear on the entered manuscript. The $15 reading fee will include the Fall 2007 issue of Pilgrimage in which the winning essay will appear. Announcement of the winner will appear here on the Pilgrimage website on Sept 15, 2007. Please include an SASE if you would like us to mail you the contest results. Manuscripts will not be returned. The winner will receive $1000 (or $500 if judges choose two winners). Other essays may also be selected for publication in Pilgrimage. Essays will be judged by David Barstow, the former editor of Pilgrimage, and Peter Anderson, the current editor.    

The winner of the 2006 Pilgrimage Writing Award is Fred Bahnson of Efland, North Carolina. His essay, "The Tender Groin of the Land", will appear in Volume 31 issue 3 of Pilgrimage which will be sent out in November.
