2008 Man Asian Literary Prize
2008 Man Asian Literary Prize – Rules for Submission
The second Man Asian Literary Prize (“Prize”) will be awarded in late November of 2008 for an “Asian novel unpublished in English”.
We invite you to submit your work between 5 December 2007 and 31 March 2008.
Award amounts
• US$10,000 to the winning author
• US$3,000 to the eligible translator (if any) of the winning work
Definitions
• “novel” implies a substantial work of fiction, usually a minimum of 30,000 words
• “in English” covers both submitted works originally in English as well as translations of works already published in other languages. If the submitted work has been previously published in a language other than English, the first publication must be no earlier than eight years before 5
December 2008.
• “unpublished” means that the submitted work’s English language publication date (if scheduled) must be no earlier than 5 December 2008.
• “Asian” means written by an author of 18 years of age or older who is both a citizen and resident of an Asian country or territory, which is defined as one of Japan, South Korea, North Korea, Mongolia, The People’s Republic of China, The Hong Kong or Macau Special Administrative Regions, Taiwan, Vietnam, Philippines, Cambodia, Laos, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, East Timor, Papua New Guinea, Thailand, Myanmar, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Afghanistan
Documentary evidence of citizenship and/or residency may be required. “Citizenship” in the case of the Hong Kong and Macau Special Administrative Regions shall be taken to mean “permanent residency”. Eligibility of any given submission is at the sole discretion of the Prize Board.
Translator eligibility
The submitter may also nominate the translator of the submitted work for the Prize. The translator may not be the author or a member of the author’s immediate family.
Submissions / Technical requirements
Submitted work must be in English through the Prize’s website (www.manasianliteraryprize.org) no later than 31 March 2008 in .txt, .doc, .rtf or .pdf format. Submissions must
• Use 1½ or double spacing
• Have margins of at least 2cm (.8 inches) on all sides
Works must be original and submitted by the author or the current holder of the rights to the English language version.
Partial submissions of 10,000 or more words will be accepted. However, a complete submission must be made by 1 August 2008 or the work will not be considered.
Awarding the Prize
Authors of shortlisted works will be invited to attend the awards ceremony in Hong Kong. The Prize will cover the cost of transportation to and from the author’s country of residency and accommodations while in Hong Kong. It is expected that the author make the best effort to attend the ceremony.
Obligations
• Only works submitted and qualifying for the “longlist” will only be eligible for the “shortlist” and the Prize. The author or the holder of the rights to the submitted work must
(a) make a complete submission of works to the Man Asian Literary Prize by 1 August 2008
and
(b) agree to provide the Prize with the author’s detailed biography and an excerpt of a minimum of 1,000 words which may be reproduced or posted by the Prize for information or publicity purposes.
Miscellaneous
• All decisions regarding eligibility or suitability of a submitted work or authors are entirely at the sole discretion of the Prize Board.
• Works submitted for the Man Asian Literary Prize is entirely at the submitter’s own risk. No copies of work submitted will be returned to the submitter of the works. Submitter warrants that he/she/it is the holder of the copyright of the submitted work and if applicable, its translation or has been authorized by the copyright holder to submit the work on his/her behalf, and shall defend and hold harmless any person or persons involved in the administration of the Prize, including members and administrators of the Prize, panel judges and any sponsors and their administrator, from liability or costs resulting from claims or action of infringement or unauthorized use of the submitted work.
• Privacy statement: Any personal data provided shall be used to facilitate the processing of works submitted to the Man Asian Literary Prize and for record purposes. All data collected will be used and retained in accordance with the Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance of the Laws of Hong Kong.
