My First Day at the Gym

I survived my first day at the gym!

Well, my trainer decided to go easy on me. Maybe it was because I repeatedly told him that the last time I exercised was 2nd-year college and my muscles might react badly to too much use. Or maybe, he saw the fear in my eyes and thought that I might not return tom.

Just like in the past, my first day at the gym was an orientation. Introductions were made. I was introduced to the proper way of exercising. I was shown the proper way of warming up and cooling down. I was shown the proper execution of stretching and calisthenics. I was also given five (5) minutes each to get to know the treadmill, stairmaster, and stationary bike.

Sounds easy. But, believe me it wasn't.

When he said that I'd be running on the treadmill for 5 minutes straight, I really thought it would be easy. But, just two (2) minutes on it made me sweat like hell. Somehow, it made me respect all the runners out there who does this for hours. The stairmaster was even harder. It's a good thing that I ate a banana before going to the gym. If not, I'll definitely experience a lot of cramping. I found the bike less strenuous. Although, the non-padded seats provided a little discomfort.

My re-introduction to stretching made me realize that I am not as flexible as I was. He said that the years of non-use have made my joints and muscles too tense and tight that it might take me a 2 years to be as flexible as a ballerina. Thus, he suggested that I take the pilates and yoga classes being offered by the gym. Just thinking of making those acrobatic poses make me cringe.

2-years... That's a long time. Sigh... God, help me sustain.
