Natural Barriers
I wonder what it would be like if there was only one language. We could call it 'Earth'. No, no. We wouldn't have to call it anything at all, if it was the only speech we used.
Dissolving language barriers could and probably would change the way we all see each other. Well, at least it would make talking to each other a lot easier. We'd have streamlined communication for the first time since, well forever.
No doubt it would be tough at first, though. The first step would have to be setting up committees and sub-committees to argue and iron out all the issues something like this would naturally bring to the surface from the get go.
The committee members would have to be extremely diplomatic. Otherwise, the temper sparks could ignite a few wars and that would bring a lot more issues to the plate. Think about it. For instance, if there was a war between English-speaking nations and Spanish-speaking nations. Would it have an English name or a Spanish name? Or would it have an Earth name? But if it had an Earth name, there would be no reason to fight in the first place. Oh dear!

I didn't really start out to write 'War of the Languages', although it might make something cool sometime. I really started this as a lament.
The first thing that caught my eye here today was Fraiman's 'Litson'. I wanted so badly to read it, but couldn't. I left a comment at his blog and all I can do is hope he translates soon, so we can see if it reads as beautifully as it looks.
