On writing a short story
June 12,2007
I am 29 years old and I still have doubts with myself regarding my talent --- do I have it? Or am I just making this up to uplift myself to overcome the insecurities. I know how to dance, I know how to paint too. But those talent of mine were poorly developed. And now I am trying my hand in writing. I couldn't make up my mind---always starting a new endeavour. I don't consider myself a writer. Anyway, how can one be a writer? Does he need to have a published work? Or does he need other people's confirmation of the title he wants? What if for example, I say I am a writer and I don't care if people would contest to that. You know I like writing very much---making up stories, writing them. I don't think much if other people would like it what is important I enjoy doing it. I have my own standards. I judge my stories according to my standards. I been writing stories since I was 8 years old. Does this makes me a writer? I don't think so, from time to time I still have lapses with grammar and spelling. A shame thing to be a writer. To be a writer has been a quest for me. I don't care if it would take me a lifetime to discover it. Maybe I ought to have a college degree in creative writing, what do you think? I was thinking did Kafka, Conrad, and Faulker had formal studies regarding writing short stories. What I like most about writing is that it is the cheapest art to develop because all you need are paper and pencil and time.

The Passion for Writing
Hi dumran,
If you have the passion for writing, then you are a writer. Grammar and craft can be learned. Let your passion fuel the study and honing of your craft...
And yes, we, writers, are blessed with cheap tools, although solitude and the time we put into our art do not come cheap. But then again, sometimes, the process itself, is enough. And the passion, of course. I am, because I write.
On Writing
In addition to paper, pencil, and time that you have mentioned as the things needed in writing, you (we) also need dedication, perseverance and will to write. Keep on writing!
