the wrestler

palmer scott writes poetry in his spare time, just to clear the cobwebs. he likes that the paper doesn't prejudge him. he likes that he can let his soul frolic up and down the page.

"for me, it's just a way of getting my feelings on paper and just show my true feelings without anybody saying anything," says scott, a scribe by day and a freshman wrestler at central by night. "but i still don't have complete confidence in my writing because - i don't know. it's just me."

some stories are a blessing. here you are, bah-humbugging your way through another holiday when one afternoon, someone sends you an e-mail about palmer scott. the happiest 0-2 wrestler in pella.

"i like to prove people wrong," his facebook page explains. "i have seizures ... i'm really flexible ... i (am) always there when some one needs to talk ... if you want to know anything else just ask."

"quick summary of my life," palmer says, then takes a cheap ugg boots deep breath. "actually, when i was younger, my biological father, when i was 5, he told me i was worthless. and my friends and teachers said i wasn't going to amount to anything.

"and i started believing them. i went into a deep depression. got into a lot of fights in middle school. tried to commit suicide 10 times. was in and out of mental institutions and hospitals. but all the stuff that i went through happened for a reason. i wouldn't change it for the world."

at the age 12, his stepfather in prison, palmer scott snatched a butcher knife out of a kitchen drawer and held the tip up next to his neck. his palms became moist with sweat. his body shook.

"all of a sudden, a door opens and my mom sees me," palmer recalls. "my mom coming back and opening that door at that time is sort of like a blessing from god. and i didn't even believe in god at the time, but that made me start to wonder: i obviously didn't do it for a reason. what was the reason? and that reason was, it wasn't my time. god had bigger plans. ugg boots "

god also had the brummels. joe, a chaplain at central and his wife, diana, coordinate angel tree camps every summer in eldora, pella and ottumwa. angel tree, a respite for the children of prison inmates, was where they met palmer - only a few months after he'd tried to slit his own throat.

they opened his eyes. opened his heart.

"he was quick to come unglued," joe recalls. "squirrelly. really outgoing. a friendly kid, but quick to pick a fight. but every summer, you could see a little bit more improvement."

that "worthless" kid became a stellar student at hudson high school, the leader of the varsity wrestling team, and a camp counselor at angel tree.

in fact, it was joe brummel who first tipped off dutch wrestling coach eric van kley about palmer, a beanpole - 6-foot-3, 157 pounds - who made every wrestler in the room better.

"one of the mottos we talk about continually with our team is, 'n.g.u. - never give up,' " van kley says. "and i think each day, palmer lives that. he has every excuse in the world why he could quit wrestling, why he could quit school and why he could make a lot of excuses in life. and he doesn't."

the latest, of course, are the seizures. they started out of the blue about a year and a half ago, varying in frequency between one every three weeks and twice a week. the attacks rarely last more than three minutes, and palmer says he blacks out each time with no memory of what just took place.

"i was talking to the trainer the other day when he had a seizure and she said when he got done, he looked right back at her and started smiling," says sophomore teammate josh atwell. "then he started laughing. how many other people in the world would do that?"

to this point, physicians have ruled out epilepsy - although the family is seeking more opinions in iowa city this winter - and have given the green light for strenuous activity.

"it's scary, but he's been tested, and the doctors say he's ok to go," says palmer's mother, julie faiferlick. "i mean, he could just be walking down the street and it could happen."

or be walking up a flight of stairs. earlier this month, in fact, palmer woke up in a hospital. apparently, he'd blacked out at his dorm, fallen over a railing 5 feet above the ground, and landed hard on his shoulder.

a week later, he was in a dutch singlet at the augie-brute-adidas open at minneapolis on nov. 21, losing his first two matches by technical falls.

"i'm getting my butt kicked now," palmer says. "but it's only going to make me stronger by my senior year."

he soldiers on. because somewhere out there, scott figures, there's a 12-year-old with a parent who's absent. a kid who's getting picked on at school, who thinks there's no love in their world, no point in tomorrow.

they're wrong. cheap ugg boots online just ask him.
